Police have managed to establish that the two separate accidents, which resulted in the deaths of three people, were caused by speeding.
Divisional Traffic Officer Western ASP Richard Raju confirmed that the two men who died in Malaqereqere, Sigatoka, this morning were on their way to work when a vehicle coming from Ba to Suva tried to overtake another car at a bend in Cuvu.
According to ASP Raju, the driver of the other car lost control and collided head on with the car, in which the two men were travelling in.
The two died instantly while the driver of the other vehicle is admitted at the Sigatoka Hospital. Other passengers travelling with the driver escaped injuries.
Meanwhile, Navua police are expected to question a driver whose car collided headon with another car at Pacific Harbour this morning causing the death of a 29-year old woman.
The deceased was driving to work with her husband when the accident took place.
The woman died instantly while her husband escaped injuries. The driver of the other car is admitted at CWM hospital and will be questioned once released. The national road death toll is now 28 compared to 26 during the same period last year.
In light of the three deaths on our roads this morning, the National Road Safety Council is reiterating its call to drivers that speeding and drink driving is against the law and drivers need to be mindful of these facts.
Executive director Akapusi Tuifagalele said the deaths were a worry adding drivers need to take responsibility.
Tuifagalele added that the National Road Safety Council can advise people on Road Safety but the decision to heed it is up to you.
