Cases of assault on suspects by police have reduced since the electronic recording system was introduced by the Fiji Police Force.

The Director Police Ethical Standards Unit Superintendent Armogam Gounder said police do not assault suspects until it is necessary to do so, mainly when a suspect is trying to resist arrest.

He said they have been receiving many complaints against police from the southern, central and the western division. He said fewer complaints are received from Nausori or Labasa.

He said many suspects complain in court that police have assaulted them to save themselves. However, he said any police officer can undergo investigations if complaints of assault are lodged against him.
