Phoenix Islands in Kiribati is the latest addition to the World Heritage Sites in the Pacific following the 34th meeting of the World Heritage Committee held recently in Brazil.
President of Kiribati Anote Tong said the most recent development relating to the listing of the Phoenix Island protected area which is the largest single marine protected area in the world.
Tong said this indeed is a very historical development and one which involved a lot of activity and support by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the New England Aquarium.
Tong added this initiative which began in 2006 is their contribution to humanity in terms of Preservation of Phoenix Islands and its surrounding ocean and its contribution to the International efforts to reduce Bio Diversity loss 2010.
