American swimming sensation Michael Phelps has now become the first athlete ever to win the most medals in the Olympic games history.

Phelps won silver in the 200 butterfly before winning gold in the 4x200 metres freestyle relay this morning to bring his total number of Olympic medals to 19.

Phelps' medal count now stands at 15 gold, two silver, two bronze.

He won eight gold at the Beijing games in 2008,six gold and two bronze in Athens in 2004,one gold and two silver in London so far.
 
The 27 year old swimmer still has three races to compete in and is expected to finish his Olympic career with 22 medals.

He now surpasses former Soviet gymnast Larissa Latynina, who won 18 medals, nine of them gold, at Melbourne in 1956, Rome in 1960 and Tokyo in 1964.

China is still leading the medal tally with 13 gold, 6 silver and 4 bronze, USA is second with 9 gold, 8 silver, 6 bronze and France is third with 4 gold, 3 silver and 4 bronze.
