For every new case of cancer reported in Fiji, there is a death.

That is the startling revelation from the Fiji Cancer Society as this month marks Cancer Awareness month.

According to the Society, in 2009 alone the Ministry of Health reported 60 new cases of breast cancer, 90 for cervical cancer and 35 new cases of cancer in men with the total reported cases standing at 372.

President of the Society, Nirmala Namibar said that despite the awareness being raised on the issue of cancer, the community is still learning to come out of their shell to address the issue.

Namibar said many people do not realize that if they come forward and cancer is detected in the early stages there is 90 percent survival rate, but this is not the case in Fiji.
