Despite feeling the full brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic, a group of parents have been providing 30 meals a day for the needy children of Saint Thomas Primary School in Lautoka since March.

They have been providing meals since Term 2 and intend to continue in Term 3 but are facing financial difficulties as they themselves have either lost their jobs, are on reduced hours or reduced rates.

Vika Leger who runs a canteen at the school says they mostly assist students whose parents were hotel workers and are no longer employed due to COVID-19.

Leger says some of these families have been affected to such an extent that some students are selling mangoes in schools as a source of income. She says the mothers are then overjoyed that they can get some income from the sale of mangoes.
