People unaware of HIV/AIDS
Due to Fiji's geographical difficulties and the strong traditional and cultural values which are still strongly observed in the rural and interior settlements and those living on the outer islands, these citizens have not been able to be reached to educate them on HIV/Aids.
Over the years, most workshops and awareness programmes organized by stakeholders have been confined to the urban and semi-urban settlements due to logistical challenges.
Fiji Red Cross Society's Health and Care Assistant Sevuloni Ratu agreed that the lack of access to telecommunication, radio or television increases the odds of an adult in the interior settlements not having any knowledge of what HIV/Aids is, how it is spread and how it can be prevented.
Ratu said there is an urgent need to try and reach these settlements.
Meanwhile, Red Cross will be holding an intensive week long training for volunteers to be able to deliver the HIV and AIDs in the Workplace programme.
