The Fiji Saw Millers Association has called on consumers to always use treated timber to build their houses after the discovery of a suspected new species of termites in Lautoka.
President Jay Dayal said they have information that some people have been cheated and sold untreated timber which gets attracted by termites.
A suspected new species of termite is posing a major threat to wooden buildings and forestry in the areas around Lautoka.
The Ministry of Forestry said the termite appears to be a new species and specimens of the termite have been sent to the Department of Primary Industries in Brisbane.
A Government task force has been established to counter the outbreak.
