In New Zealand, the Civil Defence Ministry cancelled its tsunami advisory for parts of the country, but warned people should remain vigilant.

Civil Defence Ministry director John Hamilton said the first waves were expected to arrive on the coastline from 4pm, but would be very small.

However, Mr Hamilton said larger waves would not arrive until many hours later and, although they would not be destructive, they could create strong currents which may not peak before 8pm on Thursday.

The ministry said currents may be especially strong on the West Coast between Hokitika and Karamea, but people in other coastal areas throughout the country should remain vigilant.

The ministry has put the Fire Service, Police, local authorities on stand-by on the West Coast from North Cape to Hokitika and on the East Coast from North Cape to Auckland.

People in these areas should stay out of the water and refrain from boating activities.

The ministry said even people in other coastal areas throughout New Zealand should remain vigilant.
