People in Lau are staying indoors as the islands are experiencing very strong winds and heavy rain.
DISMAC Officer in Lakeba in Lau, Joni Siliduadua said that all the Turaga-ni-Koro's have been briefed as they do not want any casualties.
Siliduadua said that at the moment the strong wind is seeing a lot of damage done to crops.
Meanwhile, the small islands in Lau are starting to feel the effects of Hurricane Tomas.
Oneata Village has been experiencing strong wind since 4am this morning.
Oneata district representative Rusiate Soqoiwasa said the church roof has been blown away and the corporative shop has been completely destroyed.
There are 4 evacuation centres.
So far there have not been any reports on injuries but villagers have been moved to church, community hall, pastor’s residence and nurses have started to clear the hospital for emergency.
In Koro, villagers are now taking essential food items and heading to higher ground as the weather gets worse.
Mudu villager Tevita Vunileba said overnight the weather had worsened.
Onto Gau in Lomaiviti, Head teacher for Lamiti Village High School Solomone Rasiga said that the villages were battered overnight by strong wind and heavy rain.
Rasiga said that he went to the village this morning and it was covered in flood water and the villagers are now assessing the damage from last night.
