Young mothers have gone through enough and to slap a high penalty on them will only deepen the psychological effect.
This is the sentiment of Women's Action for change Creativity Director, Peni Moore who said that young mothers do not abandon their child out of free will.
Moore also adds that at the moment young mothers face criticism from their friends and parents and to go to jail is unfair.
Coordinator for the Fiji Women's crisis Centre Shamima Ali also adds that the now that people are becoming more open minded they need to understand the plight of these young women.
However, Ali and Moore agree that a lot of help needs to be given to young women so that they are able to make informed decisions instead of ending the life of a child.
This follows reports earlier in the week that Sigatoka police are looking for the mother of a fully formed baby boy whose body was found in a public toilet.
