The path to the 2014 elections begins today with the Electronic Voter Registration process.

It is a historic step and a mammoth exercise and about 660 thousand eligible voters are expected to be registered under the process.

People living in and around Suva, Samabula, Nausori, Lautoka, Levuka, Labasa, and Taveuni will be able to register themselves at the designated Voter Registration Centers from today.

Another center is scheduled to open in the Lami area at the end of the week, followed by the opening of additional centers next Monday.
More than one thousand registration centers are expected to open over the eight week period.

The electronic voter registration systems have been provided by Canadian Company CODE Inc.

The government has paid $3.9 million for the units.

Minister for Elections, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum had earlier confirmed to Fijivillage that the voter registration is expected to cost about $9million.

To register eligible voters, 18 years and older would have to furnish one form of valid identification which include birth certificate, driver's license, passport, FNPF card or an employment card with a photo.

Your photo and thumbprint will then be taken before your voter ID card is issued.

Officials say the entire registration process will take less than three minutes per individual.
