It is the duty of the driver of a vehicle to ensure that the safety of his or her passengers is paramount in a motor vehicle at all times.

The Fiji Taxi Union General Secretary, Rishi Ram said that the safety of the passengers is the driver's responsibility and adds that a passenger can be fined $80 dollars for not wearing his or her seatbelt.

Ram said he sought clarification from the Land Transport Authority.

In cases where the passengers refuse to abide by the instruction given by the driver on the safety issue, the said passenger either will be asked to vacate the said vehicle or face a fine of $ 80 dollars which will be imposed by LTA.
