Passengers Suspicion Saves Lives
Those were the words of Sakiusa Soli, one of the passengers and survivors on the bus that caught fire last Thursday night claiming 10 lives.
Speaking on a talkback show on our sister station, Viti FM Soli said when the bus, which came 4 hours late, left Korovou, there were 6 people standing because there was no space to sit.
He added that at Lami Town, his wife said she was getting off because she was hearing weird noises from the bus engine. Soli said his wife also managed to convince her sister, son and other relatives to get off with her, 11 in total.
Soli said questioned her at the time on why she wanted to get off but she maintained that she did not feel safe in the bus.
He said the fire started after passing Sigatoka town, behind the driver and before the first seat adding that the driver could not stop the bus no matter how hard he tried and the only thing he could do was hit a lamp post after Naevuevu village, to stop it.
The last person to jump out of the burning Raiwaqa bus in Sigatoka managed to save his wife and a few other women before he got out of the bus.
Inoke Delainarocake, a villager of Ovalau said he will never forget the helpless people crying who were left behind the burning bus.
Speaking in Fijian, Inoke said he ran back to the bus to free a girl who cried out to him for help but he could not make it as the blaze engulfed the bus.
Police and Fire Investigators are expected to start proper investigations today with the help of Forensic Investigators from Australia.
