Police have begun their investigations in relation to the death of a one year old toddler in a house fire in Nadi on Friday this is according to Police Spokesperson Ana Naisoro.

National Fire Authority Chief Executive Officer, John O’Connor said they have referred the matter to police for further investigations as NFA does not have the authority to determine whether there was any negligence in this case.

The mother had allegedly locked her three children inside the house and gone out while the father was in the cane fields at the time of the incident.

Initial investigations by NFA revealed that the cause of the fire was due to unattended cooking.

Meanwhile, the four and two year old siblings of the deceased are still admitted at the Nadi Hospital with burns sustained from the fire.

The tragic death of the toddler in Nadi is the ninth property fire death and the fifth death involving children this year.

The number of structural fire incidents so far this year now stand at 59.
