Greenpeace has told the leaders at the Pacific Islands Forum in Niue that the Pacific region should be protected against regional security threats such as excessive greenhouse gas emission, overfishing and deforestation.

Greenhouse Pacific political advisor Seini Nabou said the Pacific faces an increase in cascading impacts of climate change that puts at risk regional security such as food, energy, health and natural resources.

Nabou added that Australia and New Zealand should support targets for industrialized countries to cut their emissions by 25 to 40 percent by 2020.

Meanwhile, Green Peace oceans campaigner Josua Turaganivalu said Greenpeace continues to advocate an overall reduction of 50% in regional tuna catch and this will not only assist regional fishery increase but also the economic returns over the longer term.
