There is a possibility that the Pacific Islanders team could play in Super Rugby competition, after the sport's bosses called for a 15-team competition to be introduced in 2011.

Australian Rugby Union Managing Director, John O'Neill suggested a "hybrid" side of Australian, Pacific Islanders and the odd NRL recruits could provide a very competitive team after a seven-hour SANZAR board meeting in Dubai last night.

O'Neill said while Australian rugby talent appears to be stretched at present with four sides, he believes a fifth team could work, and not at the expense of the Waratahs, the Force, the Brumbies and the Reds.

SANZAR will present their new competition model to broadcasters on June 30th. A Super 15 would consit of a regular round of games, followed by half-round local derbies and then a six-team final series.

O'Neill said the broadcasters could play a role in awarding the 15th licence.
