The Pacific Island Forum Communiqué on Fiji has not changed.

Today is the 1st of May, the date agreed to by Forum Island Leaders in PNG in January this year, whereby the Fiji Government is supposed to have given an election date or face suspension from the Forum.

Leaders from 15 Pacific Island countries had decided that the Fiji Government nominate an election date by 1st May 2009 and that elections are held by the end of December 2009.

It is understood that a statement will be released on the matter from the Forum later.

However it has already been announced by the Permanent Secretary for Information, Lt Colonel Neumi Leweni that they will follow the 2014 election deadline set by President Ratu Josefa Iloilo, to ensure that all necessary reforms are in place.
