A 24 hour telephone line has been set up by the Suva Water Department to address the continuing loss of revenue and water through illegal meter connection.

Department Spokesperson Maika Nagalu said that for the past years, in the Suva-Nausori Area alone illegal meters has seen 56% water from their catchment areas to houses lost along the system and in 2007 close to 59% was unaccounted for.

This has led to the auditing of water meters by the ministry OF Works which is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

However, Nagalu said with the setting of the Leak Detection Unit they have also opened up the 24 hour line: 3321992.

He added people should make use of this service as if they are found to be accommodating illegal connections their water supply will be cut and they will have to pay $80 reconnection fee while the normal is $10.
