The severity of each case where a public servant abuses his office will depend on what action to take.

Permanent Secretary for the Public Service Commission, Parmesh Chand said this following the Public Accounts Committee report for 2006 highlighting the way in which Civil servants were being punished for offences like abuse of office.

The 2006 report highlighted a case where the only disciplinary action taken was for the civil servant to be transferred to another department.

However, Chand said that this is the usual step taken after the case is closely scrutinized by the offender’s superior and the PSC Tribunal.

He adds that there are cases where the offender is either transferred or at times fired from the public service.
