The Permanent Secretary for the Public Service Commission has admitted that one of the main problems for failing to achieve the relevant pillar in the People Charter is that the PSC often fails to meet expectations.

Addressing the National Peoples Charter Advisory Council yesterday, Parmesh Chand revealed that the relevant pillar applicable to PSC is Pillar 4 dealing with the Enhancing of Public Sector Public Efficiency, performance effectiveness and service delivery.

Chand in his presentation to the Advisory Council said that the PSC continued to fail to meet the expectation of the public and this adversely affects the lives of people in particular the poor in communities.

He stressed that another problem was the fact that the Civil Service is too large for a small nation.

In PSC's first quarterly report to the Advisory Council, it was revealed that as of March 31st of this year, there were 26,925 civil servants in the public sector which was a reduction of two hundred and four civil servants since January 2009 and a total reinstatement of 1,389 positions.

Chand stressed that at the moment, to try and address the issues, compulsory training of civil servants is continuing on all levels as well as the resizing of the sector.

He also revealed that they are awaiting confirmation of financial assistance for the hire of consultants to carry out the resizing of the civil service.

A total of $300,000 has been allocated by Government for the restructure with expressions of interest being advertised.
