The Public Service Commission is expected to engage all public sector unions in talks soon over plans to reduce the number of civil servants in 2008.
Permanent Secretary for PSC Taina Tagicakibau confirmed to Village News that the much talked about redundancies within the civil service will take place soon, with the interim cabinet to decide on the numbers soon.
However, Tagicakibau stresses that other options, such as redeployment of staff will be discussed thoroughly before people are asked to leave the civil service.
Meanwhile, the Interim Prime Minister and Minister for Public Service Commodore Frank Bainimarama has stressed that the civil service will undergo a complete overhaul and makeover in 2008. Commodore Bainimarama said the entire civil service would receive a facelift in the interim government's bid to improve efficiency and productivity.
