Papua New Guinea has beaten Australia 22‑8 in a pulsating gold medal match to win the first ever Rugby League Commonwealth Championship.

The two-day international Nines tournament is an official Commonwealth event endorsed by the Commonwealth Games Federation kicked off the Commonwealth Games in fine style.

Australia was represented by Sydney Roosters who have star players like Roger Tuivasa Sheck, Sonny Bill Williams, James Maloney and Frank Paul Niusala.

However, the Kumuls was on top of their game scoring five tries to run away with the victory.

Meanwhile, the Sydney Roosters will take on the Sharks at 9.30pm Saturday in the NRL.
