PM visits Northern Lau Group
Salia villager, Olivia Degevacu said it was a special day for the villagers of Salia, as this is the first time for the people of Salia to meet the Prime Minister, and they were grateful that they could share the problems they have been facing since Cyclone Tomas directly with him.
Degevacu added that of the forty houses that are in the village, almost thirty-seven houses were destroyed, leaving behind only 7, and the villagers have been sleeping in houses without the roofs, as most were blown away during the Cyclone.
Degevacu said the Prime Minister was accompanied by some Government officials who came in to carry out and also brought with them some relief supplies, to cater for the time being.
Degevacu said it was a relief to at least get some food as most of the vegetation was completely destroyed, and they will ask Commodore Bainimarama if it is possible for the government to assist in re-building their homes.
Meanhwile, another Navy vessel is now carrying relief supplies to Moala, Matuku and Totoya, while another is servicing Vanuabalavu and other islands in Nothern Lau.
DISMAC said all crops on Vanuabalavu, Kanacea, Mago and Cicia have been destroyed namely casava, vudi, dalo, banana, bele, uvi and wi and people on these islands desperately need food and water supplies over the next few weeks.
