Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama will be touring the northern division from today.

He will be visiting cane farmers in Seaqaqa, Wailevu and Daku areas and will be discussing with them on ways the government is trying to revive the sugar industry.

Commodore Bainimarama will also be launching the Fair Trading initiative for the sugar industry in Labasa tomorrow.

Close to 5,000 sugarcane farmers will benefit financially from a pilot project that will certify their farms as fairtrade.

This was made possible after interest was shown by Tate & Lyle of United Kingdom, the largest buyers of sugar from Fiji.

Tate and Lyle have committed to buying Fairtrade sugar from Fiji in order to sell to its consumers in Great Britain.

Under the Fairtrade system, farmers have to comply with Fairtrade Labelling Organisation (FLO) International standards to be certified.

Under the Fairtrade system, farmers will be paid a Fairtrade premium in addition to the price of sugar.

This money is meant to be used to improve the lives of the farmers, their families and communities.

Commodore Bainimarama will also officially open the Fiji Islands Revenue & Customs Authority's new Savusavu office tomorrow before meeting with the business community in Labasa on Wednesday night.
