Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said they continue to work closely with the United Nations for the release of the 44 Fijian peacekeepers who have been detained by an armed group in Syria.
Speaking during the closing ceremony of the Inkk Mobile Battle of the Giants tournament yesterday, Bainimarama said the negotiations for the release of our soldiers are continuing.
The Prime Minister said that the government also has the full support of the international community.
Bainimarama said their thoughts will always be with the 44 Fijian peacekeepers being detained in Syria even in the midst of an elections campaign.
He said he has received messages from Fijians of all backgrounds expressing their deep concern and stating that they are praying for them.
Bainimarama again stressed that the Fijian soldiers are peacekeepers, not combatants and our men and women in uniform protect the vulnerable and the weak and bring peace and security to troubled regions around the world.
He said this is why there should be no excuse for their continued detention.
The Prime Minister is asking all Fijians to keep these men in their thoughts and prayers and that we come together as a community to provide whatever support we can to their families.
