The Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama met with the President of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo this week and focused on a wide range of issues.

Commodore Bainimarama told Jagdeo about the political development in Fiji and the present government's commitment to bring about sustainable peace, stability and prosperity.

They both talked about the sugar industries and the impact of flooding which both the countries experienced recently.

Commodore Bainimarama expressed his disappointment that the European Union has failed to recognise the genuine efforts of the present government on the political front and has taken a decision to withdraw sugar funds for this year which will have adverse effects on the sugar industry.

Bainimarama said that the EU has failed to take into account that the sugar funds were meant to partially offset the impact of price reduction which is already been applied with the final price cut expected from 1st October this year.

The Prime Minister told Bharrat Jagdeo that his government remains committed to the ongoing sugar industry reform to ensure its long term viability and it will seriously look into other sources of funding to ensure that the adaption strategies as programmed are implemented within the specified timeframe.
