The Prices and Incomes Board officers will be monitoring prices of basic food items as duty on selected basic food items will be reduced from tomorrow.

Cabinet had earlier approved that from the 1st of June duty will be removed from selected basic food items to a new rate of zero percent.

PIB will ensure that the impact of the zero duty is passed onto the consumers when the consignments arrive into the country from June 1st and any case of overcharging or misleading PIB will be be dealt with seriously.

Food items that will have zero duty from tomorrow include white rice, brown rice, tinned fish including sardines, tuna and mackeral, other canned fish and cooking oil. VAT will also be scrapped on locally produced eggs.
