Inspectors from the Prices and Incomes Board are now focusing their attention on towns and cities as competition amongst retailers heats up to attract Christmas shoppers.
Pricing Officer Buitiviti Builailai said inspectors are conducting random checks to ensure that prices are not pushed up on items and also monitor the quality of the products on offer.
Meanwhile, a restaurant owner in Suva, who opted to remain anonymous, said despite the increasing prices of various items they are not able to raise their prices due to the competition.
Owner of Boomerang Jewellers, Jyanti Lal said even after the takeover in December last year, when prices increased, business was good and they expect a similar trend this year.
However, in the northern division, owner of Meeno's, Hansraj Parmar said they have noticed a decline in the number of shoppers and it does not feel like the festive season in the north.
