The PAFCO factory in Levuka is back in operation after a fire earlier today threatened to burn down the fish canning factory.

The chief operating officer Chandra Prakash confirmed to Fijviillage that operations have resumed after workers at the factory and the National Fire Authority managed to contain the blaze which broke out in an old cold storage facility.

Prakash said the NFA and their own fire team responded efficiently to avert a near disaster.

He said it will take some time to establish the cost of damage but stressed that power at the factory has been restored and operations continue.

The National Fire Authority responded with two permanent officers and twenty trained volunteers with two fire trucks to put out the fire.

Early investigations indicate a severe electrical malfunction from the main supply into the maintenance building.

The incident controller at Levuka sub-officer Jona Dauninitu said the potential for the fire to spread to the town has been significantly reduced.

The Fire Authority also managed to prevent the fire from affecting a nearby restaurant, petrol station and a large diesel tank.

The NFA is sending additional manpower, hoses and equipment to Levuka this afternoon by local fibre glass boat and the regular Levuka shipping service.
