The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has taken the initiative to hold government ministries and departments accountable for not taking stringent disciplinary action against civil servants who are found to have breached their code of ethics.
While scrutinizing the Auditor General’s reports from 2000 to 2006, the Committee has noted in its reports, instances where no action was taken on recommended disciplinary measure to be initiated against offending civil servants.
It had also noted that at times, the offending officer was simply transferred to another department and serious offences were not reported to the police as recommended by the accounts committee in its reports.
Public Accounts Committee member Taufa Vakatale told Fijivillage that they are taking steps on their own accord to ensure that those who abuse their authority within the civil service are severely disciplined.
Meanwhile, the Accounts Committee has also confirmed that it has now started work on the Auditor General’s 2007 reports.
The Accounts Committee was handed reports from 2000 to 2006 to scrutinize and Vakatale confirmed that they have 80 pending reports to look through and make recommendations to the government.
