Every dog owner in the country should have a license for his or her dog.

Director Animal Health and Production of the Ministry of Primary Industries, Tomasi Tunabuna said the requirement is clearly stated in the Dog Act of 1982.

Tunabuna said the owner of a dog which attacks a person shall be liable for an offence and will have to pay a fine not exceeding $100 if found guilty.

According to Tunabuna, the Dog Act which is currently being reviewed will include new charges and the licensing issue.

He has also confirmed that a person has the right to kill the dog which attacks them likewise the public can kill a dog if they see the dog chasing anyone or any of their livestock.

Tunabuna said the person, who will kill that particular dog, will not be answerable to anyone.

He has urged people to see that their pets especially dogs are not allowed to roam freely on streets as it poses great danger to the public.
