Over 700 taxis in the North have been told to get their taxi metres calibrated in 5 days time or face the prospect of jail time.

LTA Regional manager in the North Faiyum Ali said that they have had talks with the various taxi owners in Labasa, Seaqaqa and Savusavu informing them that if on the 16th of this month, LTA Officers see them not using their meters, drivers are given a $50 spot fine.

Ali adds that if this is not paid then the driver is likely to appear in Court within 21 days charged with failure to comply with LTA.

The maximum fine is $200 and there are only two companies, Safeway Electronics and Kingston Electronics who are servicing taxis in the North.
