Over 6,000 booked for traffic offences
Director Traffic SSP Mahesh Mishra said 6,659 drivers have been booked for drunk driving, speeding ,careless driving, not wearing seatbelts and driving a vehicle without a license.
According to Mishra from January this year, 132 drivers have been arrested and charged for drunk and driving, 3,358 drivers were booked for speeding, 439 drivers were found to be driving carelessly on our roads, 203 drivers were found not to be wearing seat belts while 2,659 drivers were booked for other traffic related offences.
Meanwhile, Land Transport Authority (LTA) Spokesperson Ratu Eroni Volavola has urged people to assist LTA and Police in informing them about those drivers who drive carelessly on our roads.
Volavola said they have 16 enforcement officers on the roads who monitor drivers who are speeding and driving carelessly on the roads adding however, it is the responsibility of everyone to ensure Fiji roads are safe.
