The Public Service Commission has revealed that some civil servants over the retirement age of 55 and working in specialized fields may have to be retained for a few years until suitable replacements can be found.
As the PSC prepares to implement the new retirement age policy, Chairman Mohammad Yunus said they are looking at what options would be available as not all civil servants in the age bracket can be replaced immediately.
The PSC is now drawing up a list of civil servants above 55 before deciding who will have to retire immediately, those who would have to be retained in their fields and those who may be retired and then hired on short terms contracts.
After the Appeals Court ruled earlier this week that the PSC can reduce the retirement age from 60 to 55, the Public Sector Unions have instructed their lawyers to file for a stay order to stop its implementation and are planning to take the matter to the Supreme Court.
