There are more than 11,000 disabled persons in the country and almost 87 percent of them are uneducated.

This has been revealed by the Fiji Disabled Persons Assosciation during a media awareness workshop this week.

Assosciation member, Elenoa Kaisau said there are 7604 Fijians, 3408 Indians, 123 Rotumans and 267 females classified from other races as being disabled and from these statistics approximately 5,000 are women.

She said out of these, only 12 percent are educated while the remaining 87 percent has never attended school.

According to Kaisau out of the 12 percent educated, only 11 percent are employed while 89 percent of disabled woman have no job at all.

She said moves are underway to see that more disabled women receive at least some education.
