Over one thousand students over the past nine years have benefitted from the Student Loan Scheme with more expected to get much needed assistance this year.
Permanent Secretary at the Public Service Commission, Parmesh Chand said over the years they have noted an increase in the number of students that are able to further their education through the scheme and decided to make funds available this year.
Chand adds through the one million dollars made available by Government though the scheme was not accounted for in the 2010 National Budget, they are looking at making an average of $6,000 each available to successful applicant this year.
Since the Scheme was implemented in 2000, 1,607 students have been assisted through the Scheme. And as part of the conditions set out, high school leavers as well as Foundation students can apply if their parents earn less than $15,000.
The Scheme applications close today however Chand reveals that they may look at extending the deadline.
