The onus is now on the sugar cane farmers of Labasa to ensure the Sugar Cane farmers Fair Trade Certification initiative is a success and Fiji sugar is sold at above market prices.
Speaking at the launch of the Initiative in Labasa yesterday, representative from UK sugar importers, Tate and Lyle, Andrew Trust-court stressed the importance of making the initiative work.
Trust-court said Tate and Lyle remains committed to Fiji's sugar industry.
Meanwhile, Tate and Lyle has agreed to buy up to 70,000 tonnes of sugar from Fiji once it is fair trade certified.
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama launched the first ever Labasa Cane Growers Fair Trade certification initiative in Labasa yesterday marking a significant milestone for the sugar industry.
