Fiji's Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said only the military can bring about the changes and reforms which are necessary for Fiji.
Speaking to Radio Australia, Commodore Bainimarama said the overseas media keep referring to him as a military dictator but he sees people have to understand that the Fiji military is not doing what some of the countries in Africa have gone through.
Commodore Bainimarama has also told the ABC's Phillipa McDonald that poverty is experienced in every country around the world after being questioned about poverty in Fiji.
Bainimarama said the only way to reduce poverty is to empower people to work hard and to improve the education, health, infrastructure and other services in Fiji's rural areas.
Meanwhile Commodore Bainimarama said the Public Emergency Regulation will stay to ensure that the country remains stable.
