Only 23 horses will take part from the 24 that were supposed to feature in the Melbourne cup this afternoon after Bauer (Bower) was scratched for failing to recover from a hoof problem.
The decision to withdraw Bauer was made this morning.
Bauer came second to Viewed in 2008 and had been under a fitness cloud since late last week and had undergone several vet inspections.
Grantswater house manager Vijen Kumar said Bart Cummings So You Think remains the favourite to win.
It is expected that more than 100,000 people will be at Flemington today to cheer home Bart Cummings' champion, So You Think in the $6 million Melbourne Cup.
The 2010 Melbourne Cup will start at 5 o=clock this afternoon.
