A link has now been established that people who are overweight or obese have a higher chance of getting cancer.

Fiji Cancer Society President Marilyn Curtis said they already have a major challenge with late diagnose for children who have cancer and secondly there is an increasing number of children who are either overweight or obese.

According to World Cancer Research Fund, more and more evidence is emerging that increased body weight is linked to cancer and the fund estimates that 30 to 40 percent of cancers, or three to four million cases of cancer every year, could be prevented by good nutrition, regular physical activity and avoiding obesity.

Curtis said parents need to be mindful of these issues.
