It is a huge leap forward for America and the world as Barack Obama was elected the next President of the US last night.
Those are the words of the former Prime Minister and SDL leader Laisenia Qarase as he welcomed the election of the first ever African American President in the US.
Qarase said its shows that democracy is truly alive in America.
Qarase said from his young days and from the history in the US, the African Americans have gone through a lot but change has come as democracy always evolves.
When questioned by Fijivillage about Fiji on whether he thinks people are ready for a non Indigenous Fijian Prime Minister and President, Qarase replied that, “yes we can also do it in due course”.
