Melbourne Rebels winger James O’Connor spent Saturday night and Sunday in hospital after injuring his ribs playing against the Waratahs.

O’Connor was accidentally kneed in the ribs by Waratahs first five-eighth Berrick Barnes on Saturday and had to leave the field in pain.

O’Connor was having breathing difficulties after the match and was kept in hospital for further tests

Rebels are on a bye this week.

The only Super Rugby match on Friday this week is at 7.35pm between the Blues and Reds at Eden Park.
