The original owners of Nukulau Island are now putting proposals
together to acquire the lease to the island for development purposes and are requesting the Suva City Council to back down from its plans to lease the island.
Representative of the Roko Tui Dreketi on Nukulau Island matter, Ro Filipe Tuisawau told Fijivillage that they have met with the Interim Lands Minister on the matter.
Ro Filipe said they intend to turn the island into a tourist destination from which the original owners of Nukulau can benefit, even though their plans are in its initial stages.
While the Suva Lord Mayor Ratu Peni Volavola is yet to comment on these concerns, he had earlier confirmed to Fijivillage that various proposals are being put together by the SCC to acquire the lease to Nukulau Island and develop it for tourism purposes.
