The interim Local Government Minister should understand that not all councils are corrupt.

This is the opinion of Labasa Lord Mayor, Doctor Pardeep Singh in reply to the comments by the Interim Local Government Minister Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi's comments that some councillors were using their status for personal gains.

Singh adds that their clean record and rate payers satisfaction should be testimony to this.

Singh also added that the Municipality would be holding a meeting next week to address the issue before they reply to the minister.

Earlier today...

Interim Minister for Urban Development and Local Government, Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi looked at reviewing the local government legislation.

Speaking at the Fiji Local Government Association meeting, Vayeshnoi made it clear that there is a need to change ways that local municipal councils work.

Vayeshnoi said that he will now be working closely with the Attorney General to see what changes they can bring.

He also warned that his ministry will not tolerate those council members who benefit personally from the work they do in their councils.

Vayeshnoi had earlier warned that the ministry would closely monitor the performance of the municipalities in the next two weeks.

Meanwhile, Labasa Lord Mayor, Doctor Pardeep Singh has come out in support of the move by the Interim Local Government Minister, Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi to change Council laws.

Doctor Singh said that the move is a timely one as a review is long overdue.
