Hundreds of land leases are now being renewed for agriculture farming in the Northern division.
The Native Land Trust Board (NLTB) briefed interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama in Savusavu last night and confirmed to him that many landowners in the Northern division have expressed their willingness to continue extending the leases for their land.
NLTB's Manager Northern Joreti Dakuwaqa said most landowners have agreed to the renewal of expired leases, the expiring leases and those with terminated leases have agreed to release them to good tenants.
Dakuwaqa said potential areas have been identified by the Ministry of Agriculture and agreed to for leasing for the cultivation of suitable crops. He said most landowners have agreed to renew leases to existing tenants and most have also agreed to give their unused land for leasing.
Between 1997 and 2007, a total of 797 leases have been renewed while 278 are yet to be renewed for the same period.
For the period of 2008 to 2013, 453 leases will expire while 134 leases which have been terminated are due to be released.
