With the revelation that 27,300 people are receiving welfare monthly allowances, the highest of this total number are those in the Northern Division.

Social Welfare Department Assistant Director Children Services Sudhnory Nagaiya said as at the end of June, the Northern Division recorded the highest with 6,293 recipients.

The Southern Eastern Division is the second highest with 5,641 followed closely by the South Western division with 5,573 then the Central Division with 4,823 with the North West Division recording the lowest recipients with 3,984.

While concerns were raised by the Social Welfare Minister Dr Jiko Luveni about how strong healthy people are asking for assistance, Nagaiya said unemployment may be the reason behind this fact.

Nagaiya added given that the budget for Family Assistance remains at $20 million for this year, they are not anticipating the number of welfare requests to increase substantially.
