Interim Prime Minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama has reassured the nation that normal services will be provided at 11 different ministries as the Fijian Teachers Association, Public Employees Union and Viti National Union of Taukei Workers go on strike this morning.
Bainimarama said that specific measures and actions to counter possible service disruptions include public works, civil aviation and transport, operation of ports of entry and the maintenance of government assets and property.
The Education Ministry stresses that schools will only be ordered to close by the Permanent Secretary for Education, not the FTA.
Parents are advised to contact their children's schools this morning if they have any queries.
Meanwhile, Fiji Teachers Union General Secretary Agni Deo Singh has clarified that none of their members will go on strike from 8am today following claims by the FTA.
The Fijian Teachers Association has 4,200 members, the Public Employees Union 5,200 members and the Viti National Union of Taukei Workers has 600 members. We are trying to establish whether all the members will go on strike from this hour.
