Former National 7s rugby trainer and Fiji National University’s Sports Science lecturer Samu Yavala believes there is no strong training foundation for our Digicel Fiji 7s team.

Yavala was responding to Ben Ryan’s comments on the fitness level of our sevens team at the Gold Coast 7s.

Yavala who trained the national sevens team that won our first Melrose Cup in 1997 said more emphasis is being put on competition rather than preparations and it can be compared to putting money in the bank.

Yavala added preparations should have started in the off season.

Yavala said he is ready to assist the team if needed.

Menawhile, FRU’s National Academy’s Programmes Manager Frank Boivert agrees with Ben Ryan’s comments in relation to the players fitness levels at the Gold Coast 7s.

Boivert said last night’s plate final win over Kenya is a miracle as the team only prepared for one week and two days.

The Digicel Fiji sevens side will arrive at 5:30am tomorrow in Nadi before they prepare for the Dubai 7s on the 29th and 30th of next month where Fiji is pooled with England, Canada and USA.
