The Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Stephen Smith said he expects Canberra will eventually follow the lead of New Zealand in resuming talks with Fiji.

This is according to the Australian High Commission on queries on whether the Australian Government has shown any interest in reviving talks with Fiji, in light of the successful talks held between the Foreign Ministers of Fiji and New Zealand earlier this month.

According to the Australian High Commission, Smith said he discussed the visit with McCully before Christmas and gave him his support, but at this stage there was no time frame for Australia to hold similar talks with Fiji.

The New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully recently visited Fiji where he met with Foreign Affairs Minister Ratu Inoke Kubuabola and agreed to restore some diplomatic postings.
